In early 1997, a man from the state of Washington named Mel Waters sent a fax into a syndicated radio show hosted by Art Bell. The show, which specialized in "weird and bizarre" topics, often aired stories of a fantastical nature. The fax detailed one such claim of a bizarre nature. In it, Mel stated that he owned a bit of property somewhere on the Manastash Ridge. On that property, Mel claimed that there was bottomless pit that was at least as deep as 80,000 feet. Intrigued by the story, Art booked Mel to appear on the show a few days later. This would begin an extraordinary tale of strange happenings spanning many years, and two different mysterious bottomless holes.
